Cowen & Jacobs is a woman-owned law firm in Hackensack, New Jersey, practicing divorce and family law, personal injury law, and employment law for clients across Bergen County.
We are not a firm that learned Bergen County from the outside. Our attorneys built their careers inside the local court system, and we practice from Court Plaza South, steps from the Bergen County Justice Center in Hackensack. That means when you walk into a courtroom or a negotiation with us, you have counsel who knows the local bench, the local procedures, and how disputes actually get resolved in this county.
Our prime concern in every case is protecting our clients’ immediate and long-term interests. We develop legal strategies tailored to your specific needs, resolve matters in the most cost-effective way possible, and are never intimidated by opposing counsel, whether in settlement, in litigation, or in the appellate courts.
For a free consultation to discuss your case, call Cowen & Jacobs today at 201 525-0025.
Divorce brings legal, financial, and emotional challenges all at once. Our Hackensack divorce lawyers guide clients through every kind of case, from negotiated settlements to high-conflict, complex-asset litigation, for families across Bergen County. Many of our cases move through the Bergen County Family Division at the Justice Center on Main Street, minutes from our office, giving us direct insight into how local judges handle custody, support, and asset division. When finances get complicated, we bring in forensic accountants and tax experts to protect what matters to you.
Beyond divorce, we represent Bergen County families in the family law matters that shape their futures, from child custody and child support to domestic violence, post-judgment modifications, grandparent rights, and adoption. We take the time to understand your situation, explain the legal framework in plain language, and build a strategy informed by how the local courts actually decide these cases.
When a serious injury upends your life, you need the resources to recover. Our Bergen County personal injury attorneys assess your claim honestly, tell you what compensation to realistically expect, and resolve most cases through negotiated settlement to spare you the time and cost of trial, while staying fully prepared to litigate when that serves you better. We handle car accidents, slip-and-falls and trip-and-falls, pedestrian and bicycle accidents, and birth injuries.
Workplace discrimination, harassment, and wrongful termination carry real fear: fear of retaliation, fear of losing your job. As a woman-owned firm, our employment lawyers understand the challenges workers face and represent employees zealously across Hackensack, Teaneck, Englewood, Fort Lee, and surrounding Bergen County communities. We handle discrimination, sexual harassment, whistleblower and retaliation claims, and severance and compensation packages, and we also counsel employers on handbooks, contracts, and policies to keep pace with New Jersey employment law.
Most firms will tell you they have experience. We can show you where ours comes from. Both partners built their careers inside the Bergen County court system, and we practice from Court Plaza South, steps from the Justice Center in Hackensack. That local depth shapes how we prepare, negotiate, and litigate every case.
While we cannot guarantee the results of any case, many clients have been thrilled with how we handled theirs. Call us today to find out what we can do for you.

Barbara E. Cowen represents clients in complex, emotionally charged family law matters, including divorce, custody, support, and domestic violence. Admitted to the New Jersey bar in 1981, she earned her J.D. cum laude from Pace University School of Law and serves on the Bergen County Ethics Committee.
From the first call to resolution, you work directly with a named partner, not a rotating cast of junior staff. Here is what working with Cowen & Jacobs looks like:
It depends on your case. Personal injury matters are typically handled on a contingency basis, meaning you pay no attorney fee unless we recover for you. Family and employment matters are handled differently, and we explain exactly how billing works during your free consultation, so there are no surprises.

In Bergen County, uncontested divorces where both spouses agree on the major issues often conclude sooner, while cases involving custody disputes, complex assets, or business valuations typically take longer. We give you a realistic timeline for your specific situation.

I cannot say enough about this law firm. Both attorneys are great, though Sara Jacobs is the one I worked closely with. Sara worked so hard on my case, and she was able to bring it to the exact conclusion I needed, even though working with others who were unwilling to cooperate. Sara moved mountains for me, and I am so grateful. She has also given me valuable advice and counsel to which I have referred time and again.
Choosing an attorney is the first stressful part of a long custody process. The right choice, your guide through this experience, will directly impact your life and your children's life. Fortunately, I made the right choice retaining my attorney, when I hired Barbara Cowen. Barbara is a wonderful, sweet, kind, generous and compassionate person. She is also extremely knowledgable, meticulous and principled. But above all, going through an emotionally taxing experience, Barbara moved quickly and efficiently through the settlement process. I could not possibly recommend Barbara highly enough!
This was my first experience dealing with an attorney and Sara Jacobs made this experience as easy and stress free as possible. She is very knowledgeable and goes above and beyond for her clients. I highly recommend Sara Jacobs , she is a true professional and gets the job done.
Barbara handled my case with the utmost respect and diligence. I felt taken care of every step of the way, from our first meeting and until after our (successful) court appearance. I truly recommend this law firm for someone looking for the best.
